Definition of Tornado

A tornado is defined as a rapidly spinning air mass extending from a thunderstorm down to the terrestrial surface. This severe meteorological phenomenon is distinguished by its funnel-shaped cloud, and it is notorious for inflicting significant damage by generating intense winds and lifting and transporting debris.

Tornado Formation

The development of tornadoes is predominantly associated with supercell thunderstorms, recognized by an enduring rotational updraft termed a mesocyclone. The juxtaposition of warm, humid air in the lower atmosphere and colder, drier air at higher elevations initiates the conditions conducive for tornado genesis.

Tornado Classification
