July in Antarctica marks the apex of the winter season, where the continent is subjected to the harshest weather conditions. With the sea ice at its greatest extent, the continent is effectively cut-off from conventional sea travel. As such, tourism is non-existent during this period due to the inhospitable conditions.

In terms of wildlife, the majority of species have migrated away, leaving only the hardiest residents behind. Notably, the emperor penguins persist through these extreme conditions. The male penguins are in the midst of their breeding cycle, incubating their eggs in the coldest months of the year.
