Weather in July

July in Antarctica marks the apex of the winter season, where the continent is subjected to the harshest weather conditions. Coastal areas experience temperatures between -30°C (-22°F) and -25°C (-13°F). However, the interior, particularly the high plateau, faces temperatures as low as -75°C (-103°F), making it one of the coldest places on Earth.

In prominent research stations like McMurdo and Amundsen-Scott South Pole, temperatures remain well below freezing. At McMurdo Station, temperatures can reach -30°C (-22°F), while at the South Pole Station, the mercury dips to -75°C (-103°F).

With the sea ice at its greatest extent, the continent is effectively cut-off from conventional sea travel. As such, tourism is non-existent during this period due to the inhospitable conditions.

In terms of wildlife, the majority of species have migrated away, leaving only the hardiest residents behind. Notably, the emperor penguins persist through these extreme conditions. The male penguins are in the midst of their breeding cycle, incubating their eggs in the coldest months of the year.

Compared to June, July continues the trend of extreme cold and darkness, with the sun remaining below the horizon, resulting in a Polar Night. Looking ahead to August, conditions remain similar, with the continent continuing to experience the extremities of the winter season before the onset of spring.
