Weather in February

In China, February signifies the transition from the heart of winter towards the arrival of spring. This transition, however, is not uniformly experienced across the country due to its diverse topography and large geographical expanse.

Northern and central regions of China continue to face cold conditions in February, although temperatures begin to rise slightly compared to January. The average temperatures in Beijing, for example, range from -2°C (28.4°F) to -8°C (17.6°F), signifying a slight increase from the preceding month. Meanwhile, the arid northwest continues to experience its harsh winter, though with marginally milder temperatures.

Harbin, the city in the northeast, known for its ice and snow festival, still faces frigid conditions. However, the temperatures tend to increase slightly from the extreme lows of January, marking the beginning of the end of its notoriously long and harsh winter.

In stark contrast, the southern region of China continues to enjoy a mild winter. Cities like Guangzhou, in the southeast, experience temperatures between 10°C (50°F) to 18°C (64.4°F), which is slightly warmer than in January. Similarly, the southwestern province of Yunnan, with its high altitudes, experiences a slight rise in temperature, which adds to the comfort of the climate.

February also sees an increase in precipitation compared to January, especially in the southeastern regions of the country. While the rainfall is still significantly lower than during the monsoonal summer months, this slight increase heralds the impending arrival of spring.

In the high mountain ranges, February continues to be a month of significant snowfall, albeit slightly less than in January. Mount Everest, for example, still remains well within the grip of winter, with temperatures continuing to hover around the -18.9°C (-2°F) to -36.1°C (-33°F) range, thus ensuring persistent snow cover.
