Weather in May

As May arrives in Costa Rica, the transition from dry season to the wet season, often called the "Green Season," begins. Average temperatures across the country during May hover between 22°C (71.6°F) and 27°C (80.6°F). The coastal lowlands experience a slight decrease in temperature from the warmer month of April, providing a more comfortable climate for travellers seeking to explore the beautiful coastlines.

In the central highlands, including regions such as San Jose and the Cordillera Central, average temperatures range from 20°C (68°F) to 22°C (71.6°F). While the rainfall increases during this month, periods of sunshine still prevail, making this an excellent time for sightseeing and experiencing Costa Rica's vibrant flora in its freshest and greenest state.

The Caribbean coast, which sees more consistent rainfall throughout the year, continues its trend with rainfall spread throughout May. Despite this, the diversity of wildlife and lush tropical vegetation provide a rich experience for nature enthusiasts.

Although May does not approach the record high temperatures set in February 1964, travellers can still expect warm weather. However, as the month progresses, the frequency and volume of rainfall gradually increase. This precipitation, which usually takes the form of afternoon showers, brings a refreshing relief from the daytime heat and enlivens the tropical landscapes.

Heading into June, the wet season becomes more pronounced, with rainfall becoming more regular and temperatures slightly decreasing. Despite the change in weather, May remains a wonderful time to visit Costa Rica to enjoy the blooming landscapes and witness the beginning of the Green Season.
