Weather in January

January is deep within Estonia's winter season and is notably the coldest month of the year. During this month, average temperatures can drop from -1°C (30.2°F) on the Baltic islands to as low as -5.3°C (22.5°F) in the inland regions. In some years, temperatures can fall even further during severe cold spells. It is a stark contrast to the relatively milder conditions of December and the slightly moderating temperatures to be expected in February.

The country's capital, Tallinn, experiences average temperatures from -2.8°C (27°F) to -6.7°C (19.9°F) in January. Despite the city's coastal location, the effect of the Baltic Sea in moderating the climate is significantly diminished during this period due to ice cover.

In Tartu, situated further inland, temperatures in January can often drop even lower, falling between -3.5°C (25.7°F) to -7.6°C (18.3°F). The city's inland position contributes to these colder temperatures as it is less affected by the warming influence of the Baltic Sea.

January also sees Estonia receive a significant portion of its annual snowfall. The country is usually covered in a blanket of snow during this time, with an average snowfall ranging from 20cm to 30cm. This results in picturesque, snow-covered landscapes across the country, with even more snowfall experienced in the hilly southern regions.

Precipitation in January is relatively low, with an average of 30mm (1.18") to 40mm (1.57") falling primarily as snow due to the prevailing cold temperatures. This is less than the amounts received in the wetter months of the year, such as October and November.

In terms of daylight, January experiences some of the shortest days of the year. At the beginning of the month, daylight can last only around 6 hours, increasing to approximately 7.5 hours towards the end of the month. Despite the cold and short days, the stunning winter landscapes and outdoor activities such as skiing and ice fishing make Estonia an interesting destination in January for those who enjoy the winter season.
