Weather in March

In March, Iceland begins its slow transition from winter to spring. Average temperatures rise slightly compared to February, ranging from 0°C (32°F) to 3°C (37.4°F). The coastal regions, including the capital Reykjavik, remain milder than the interior highlands due to the warming effect of the North Atlantic Ocean. Nevertheless, it is still relatively cold, and snowfall continues, albeit less frequently compared to the preceding winter months.

One of the most significant changes in March is the noticeable increase in daylight hours. From the beginning to the end of the month, daylight hours extend from about 10 hours to approximately 13 hours, signaling the onset of longer days characteristic of Iceland's spring and summer seasons. The sun rises around 8 am and sets around 8 pm by the end of March.

Although snowfall is less common in March than in February, it still occurs, especially in the northern and central parts of the country. Precipitation is also prevalent, averaging between 70mm (2.76") and 80mm (3.15"), predominantly in the form of rain or sleet in the southern and western coastal regions. As the month progresses and temperatures rise slightly, rain becomes more common than snow, especially in lower altitude areas.

The wind remains a constant companion in Iceland's weather, and March is no different, with average wind speeds around 15km/h (9.3mph). These winds, coupled with the still relatively low temperatures, can result in a wind chill factor that makes it feel colder than the actual temperature.

Despite the cold, March is a popular time for visitors who wish to experience the final throes of winter while enjoying the increasing daylight hours. The combination of snow-covered landscapes, long twilight hours, and less frequent snowstorms compared to the peak winter months makes it an appealing time for outdoor activities. The opportunity to see the Northern Lights also persists, although as daylight hours increase, the viewing window narrows.
