Weather in August

August in Nepal signifies the tail-end of the monsoon season with continued high temperatures and significant rainfall. In Kathmandu, the capital city nestled in the hilly mid-region, average temperatures generally fluctuate between 20°C (68°F) and 30°C (86°F). The southern lowland Terai regions experience hotter conditions, with temperatures typically varying from 30°C (86°F) to 40°C (104°F). Higher up in the Himalayan regions, temperatures range from 15°C (59°F) to 25°C (77°F).

The city of Pokhara, beautifully positioned between serene lakes and towering mountains, sees average temperatures from 25°C (77°F) to 35°C (95°F). While the city continues to receive substantial rainfall in August, the frequency and intensity of rain events start to decrease towards the end of the month.

In August, the Terai plains remain entrenched in a tropical monsoon climate with hot, humid, and rainy conditions. However, towards the end of the month, the region begins to see a gradual decline in rainfall, marking a transition from the peak monsoon season.

Although August is still one of the rainiest months in Nepal, there is a noticeable decrease in rainfall compared to July. The monsoon begins to recede, leading to less frequent and less intense rain events, although the weather can still be quite unpredictable.

The risk of landslides and flooding due to the monsoon continues to render high altitude trekking routes, such as the Everest Base Camp and the Annapurna Circuit, less accessible. The hot, humid, and rainy conditions in the Terai region continue to make wildlife viewing at the Chitwan National Park less appealing. However, the Kathmandu Valley, despite the considerable rainfall, may still offer trekking opportunities during less rainy periods, particularly towards the end of the month.
