Weather in March

March in Russia is a month of transition, as the severe winter starts to yield to the onset of spring. Despite this, temperatures across the country generally remain in the cold range, although warmer days start to appear towards the end of the month.

In Siberia and the northern parts of the country, the intense cold begins to moderate somewhat. In Oymyakon, one of the coldest inhabited places on earth, temperatures in March start to rise, averaging from -33°C (-27.4°F) to -18°C (-0.4°F). Similarly, other parts of Siberia also see a reduction in extreme cold, although the weather remains firmly in the winter zone.

In the central part of the country, including cities such as Moscow and Saint Petersburg, March brings a slight thaw. In Moscow, average temperatures range from -5°C (23°F) to 2°C (35.6°F), marking the initial signs of spring. Similarly, Saint Petersburg experiences temperatures from -4°C (24.8°F) to 2°C (35.6°F). Persistent snow cover begins to melt towards the end of the month, signalling the end of the long winter.

In contrast, the southern regions, particularly around the Black Sea coast, see a further increase in temperature. Cities like Sochi witness a comfortable climate with temperatures ranging from 7°C (44.6°F) to 12°C (53.6°F). Occasional rain becomes more common as snowfall decreases.

Sunlight hours extend further in March, as Russia moves away from the winter solstice. Even cities like Murmansk in the far north start experiencing significantly longer days, indicating the end of the long Polar Night.

Precipitation in March varies widely across Russia. Snow continues to fall in northern and central parts, though at reduced rates compared to the winter months. However, towards the end of the month, rainfall starts to replace snowfall, particularly in the western and southern parts of the country.

As March progresses into April, the warming trend continues. The spring equinox in the latter part of March marks the official end of winter and the beginning of spring, leading to milder weather conditions in the ensuing months. However, March itself remains a mixture of lingering winter cold and the first hints of spring warmth.
