May is the final month of the 'Masika', the long rainy season in Tanzania. While the amount of rainfall begins to lessen compared to April, it can still be significant, usually exceeding 150mm (5.91"). The conditions start to improve as the month progresses, making outdoor activities more accessible towards the end of the month.

Temperatures during May remain reasonably high but start to cool down slightly compared to the previous months. In coastal areas and islands, including Zanzibar, Pemba, and Mafia, temperatures usually range from 26°C (78.8°F) to 31°C (87.8°F). The northern and southern highlands, including regions around the Serengeti and Mbeya, witness mild temperatures, typically varying between 19°C (66.2°F) to 24°C (75.2°F).

In Dar es Salaam, the city's coastal position leads to hot and humid conditions, with average temperatures often remaining above 30°C (86°F). In contrast, Dodoma, located in the country's central region, experiences slightly cooler conditions with temperatures usually between 19°C (66.2°F) and 29°C (84.2°F).

Compared to April, May sees a decrease in both rainfall and temperatures as Tanzania transitions towards the dry season. Despite the ongoing rains, the end of May can be a good time for wildlife viewing, particularly in the northern circuit. Moreover, the landscapes remain lush and vibrant, providing spectacular photographic opportunities. As May is considered part of the low tourist season in Tanzania, travellers can enjoy a quieter safari experience and lower prices during this time.
